About This Blog

The purpose of this blog is to create a space where the themes of this year’s Malden Reads book choice, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie can generate conversation and awareness about the many and varied groups of indigenous peoples of North American: what there story has been and how that story is unfolding today going forward. We hope more of us will engage with this important conversation.

Some initial questions to begin the conversation.
  • What are some American Indian perspectives about their life before, during, and after the earliest non-Native settlers arrived?
  • What is the history of the relationship between the indigenous people and the first European settlers of North America?
  • What is the nature of the relationship between the U.S. Government and the indigenous peoples of North American past and present?
  • What efforts are being made to maintain and/or reintroduce American Indian cultures into modern North American life?
  • How do American Indians live in North America today and what are their concerns, needs, and vision for their lives, culture, lands they inhabit, and peoples with whom they share that land?
In response to these questions, the blog posts will offer  information and resources from knowledgeable organizations and individuals.  In addition we invite you to add your input, pose new questions, and share any leads you have to articles, websites, books and other resources that might serve this purpose.
